Cleanings and Prevention

A preventive (recare) program is a joint cooperative effort between you and our team to preserve your natural teeth, gums, and bones of the oral area by preventing dental diseases and conditions.  We will work with you to customize a program that fits your routine.  Our hygiene department has trips, tricks and tools that make keeping your mouth and teeth clean and healthy.  Let us know if you are having issues with food catching, tenderness on your gums, or just a tricky area to reach with your brush.  We would love to be partners in your quest for great oral health.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is an exciting way of making your smile looks its best.  Perhaps whitening with a custom fitted appliance will give your teeth the lift you are looking for.  With time, fillings can become stained or pitted, so sometime just updating a previous repair will help it blend in naturally.  A crowded tooth can look out of place.  There are lots of ways to re-shape or rebuild a tooth that is not quite lined up the way you would like it.  Adding bonding to mimic the enamel can be a quick and easy fix.  Sometimes a more complex case will be better suited to veneers or crowns.  A missing tooth can be replaced with a bridge, denture or implant.  There are so many different options to explore depending on your specific needs .  Bring us your questions and your wish list and let’s see what we can come up with together to give you the smile you’ve always dreamed of.

Gum and Bone

Periodontics is that specialty of dentistry that encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes.  Plaque is the bacterial deposit that builds up on the teeth.  It makes your teeth feel fuzzy or sticky.  If it lingers for a long time, it can harden into tartar or calculus which is a little harder to remove at home.  Long term irritation and inflammation can begin to erode the bone support of your teeth making them weak or sensitive.  Larger spaces between the teeth as a result of this bone loss or recession might require some different tools at home to prevent food catching.  Recent studies have confirmed the link between the health of your heart and brain with the health of your mouth.  Many of our patients have discovered the benefits of using an electric toothbrush.

Oral Surgery

Oral surgery is specialized dentistry concerned with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of congenital or acquired conditions of the mouth and associated regions.  Teeth that are badly broken or fractured can not always be saved.  In a case like this, removing the tooth is the only option.

Sometimes a baby tooth gets stuck and it unable to be pushed out by the growing adult tooth.  This would also be a case where the baby tooth would benefit from a little wiggle to make room for the next one.

Wisdom teeth may not grow in properly and might need to be removed if they start to cause problems.  We often refer tricky wisdom teeth to an oral surgeon because they can offer sedation to our patients.  People who have some anxiety about a toot removal can also be treated with a referral to the specialist.

Orthodontic treatment corrects teeth and jaw alignment problems.  Orthodontics can be completed with a retainer, full braces or with clear alligners (Invisalign).  Simple tooth movement can be done in our office and we also have several excellent orthodontic specialists in the area who are able to deliver beautiful results for adults or kids who have some crowding or bite problems.  We can assess your needs and make a referral for treatment at a specialists office.

Pediatric dentistry is the branch of dentistry that deals with infants, children and adolescents including those patients with special care needs. Children love visiting The Firehall Dentist.  We cater to children with Netflix movies, laughing gas, tiny little anaesthetic pens that can numb a tooth in a painless and non-threatening way.  By listening and explaining everything and by offering a lot of praise and encouragement, children feel empowered to have small fillings completed in a stress free appointment.  Sometimes, cavities get ahead of even the most diligent child.  If extensive work is needed or if kids are very nervous, we can ensure a smooth and predictable outcome with the referral to a specialist who offers sedation for children’s dental care.  The kids have a little nap, and when they wake up all their fillings are completed.  We always want to make sure our little people have a positive experience at the dentist.

Root Canal

Endodontics is a combination of the Greek words “Endo,” which means “inside” and “odont,” which means “tooth.” Endodontic treatment involves treating the inside of the tooth.

Of all the procedures in dentistry, root canals probably produce the most dread. Thankfully, in the age of modern dentistry, this is unfounded. A root canal is actually a specialized procedure to clean out an infection from within the root of the tooth and then sealing the root with a sterile plug.  Because we recognize that our patients deserve the very best care, we usually refer people for root canal therapy to a specialists office.  An endodontist has specialized training and equipment and the experience of limiting their scope of practice to this very delicate procedure.  Our patients are always amazed at how quick, comfortable and painless a root canal can be when completed by a sensitive, specialized and skilled specialist.  You deserve the very best treatment, so that is why we have the confidence to refer most root canals to a specialist.

Sedation Dentistry

For some people, dentistry creates a lot on anxiety.  Laughing gas or an oral sedative (triazolam) can be used to reduce anxiety.  Sometimes, just having someone that you trust, who listens and respects your needs and wishes is enough to help heal your anxiety.  We pledge to give you control of every aspect of your appointment.  We would never put you in a position that would compromise your mental or physical safety or wellbeing.  For people with additional sedation needs, we can refer you to a specialist who can use deeper levels of sedation so that you are completely unaware of all parts of your treatment.  Let us know what works best for you, and we can make a plan that works for your individual requirements.

Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders, commonly called “TMJ,” are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement.  Stress can be a factor for TMJ as clenching and grinding can strain your jaw and cause headaches and tension in your face, jaw or neck.  We have a lot of resources to help manage TMJ problems.  Changes in diet, sleep position, work posture and reducing stress levels can all help.  Often an appliance or night guard can be made to assist the jaw in healing itself.  We also work with chiropractors, massage therapists , osteopaths or acupuncture providers to provide some complimentary treatment.
